We invite all our Butterfly Conservation members as well as members of the public to join us at our Brown Hairstreak Survey Events or Branch Winter Zoom Presentations - all our branch presentations are free.

Additional Winter Zoom presentations are organised by Butterfly Conservation Surrey & SW London Branch - these do require advance booking

Important instructions for our Brown Hairstreak Survey events
  • Before the event, we recommend you watch our YouTube presentation from 2021 which tells you all about finding Brown Hairstreak eggs and the history of the species in Middlesex. https://youtu.be/LTQiet-GRQA
  • In advance - please email: elizabethgoodyear@talk21.com to confirm which event you wish to attend. This is essential in case of bad weather and the need to cancel or postpone! We will then contact you prior to each event to confirm you are still coming and any extra contact details for the day.
  • Always wear strong shoes - we recommend OLD Wellington Boots as conditions can be very muddy
  • Wear warm OLD clothes including hat and gloves
  • It is recommended you bring a small hand lens
  • If you need reading glasses bring them
  • You may wish to wear safety glasses
  • Bring something warm to drink
  • Please don't bring your dog along - they will get bored!
  • If you decide to leave the event early, please tell the leader that you are going
  • Please do not attend if you have had a positive COVID-19 test within 7 days prior to the meeting; you have any COVID symptoms or feel unwell

Presentation Title: 'Big City Butterflies Project Achievements'

Information Join Big City Butterfly project officers, Emma Bickford (Engagement Officer) and Steve Bolton (Conservation Officer)

For the last three and a half years, activities focusing on the project’s three themes: improving habitats, recording species and inspiring people, have been delivered across 17 inner-London boroughs. Project officers Emma and Steve will take you through the project’s acheivements and plans for legacy as they move into the final few months of the project.
Big City Butterflies, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is a project run by Butterfly Conservation that is inspiring Londoners to discover butterflies and moths, and connect them with nature and their local green spaces.

Presentation Title & Speaker: 'Colombia - home to 20% of the world's butterfly species' - Ian Small

Information Ian Small is our Membership Secretary and Newsletter Editor.  His talk will be a ‘winter warmer’ - an antidote to a cold, dark, winter evening - which will showcase many bright and colourful butterflies from one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.

Time/meeting place: 10:15 at Ruislip Gardens Underground Station (Central Line Zone 7) (There is approx. 1km walk to the site along the Yeading Brook from Ruislip Gardens) for 10:30 start at Stafford Road Open Space. Meet by the welcome sign on the brook side path (TQ0961085515). From the Bedford Road entrance, walk 250m along the service road past the allotment entrance. We aim to finish by 13:00.

Transport & directions: On Central Line, also E7 bus (every 20 minutes) from Ruislip (Metropolitan & Piccadilly) to Ealing Broadway (District and National Rail). Very limited pay and display parking at station, some off street parking plus car parks at Sidmouth Drive (HA4 ODA) and Ruislip Gardens shops at New Pond Parade, West End Road (HA4 6LR). The streets around Stafford Road usually have a few parking spaces but it can be quite busy at the weekend.

Transport & directions: The nearest underground station is Sudbury Town (Piccadilly Line Zone 4) - approx. 17 minute walk via Allendale Rd and the Capital Ring. We do not recommend travelling to Perivale on the Central Line as the walk from the station is along a busy road with no safe pavement. Unfortunately this part of the site is not served well by public transport.

Transport & directions: The nearest mainline station is Bushey (London Northwestern Railway from London Euston (approx. 1 mile walk) alternatively it is possible to walk across the site from Carpenders Park (London Overground). Buses are reasonably frequent and stop at Merry Hill Road (eastern end). The 258 runs from Watford Junction to South Harrow station and the 142 runs from Watford Junction to Brent Cross - both call at Bushey Station. It is approx. 8 minute walk along Merry Hill Road to the meet point. We suggest you park in Victoria Road just off Merry Hill Road a short distance from the meeting point.

By Car: The entrance to Greenwood Park and the Centre is located off Tippendell Lane close to the A405, approximately 1.5 miles from M25, J21A and 2 miles from M1 J6. At the Tippendell Lane roundabout on the A405 follow the signs to Greenwood Park. There is plenty of free car parking when you reach the centre.

Additional advice

Children
Children are welcome at our events, but if under 16 they must be accompanied by at least one adult for two children. It is the responsibility of the accompanying adult(s) to ensure that the event is within the children's ability.

Bad weather
Leaders of these events will be at the meeting point unless the conditions are unsuitable and the event cancelled.

Lyme Disease

Unfortunately, all survey events will not be suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Please contact the named leader in advance if you have any concerns about accessibility.

Public Transport
We aim to give as much information as possible, although unfortunately some of the Hertfordshire events are not easily accessible by public transport. Train times should be checked, as timetables change and engineering works take place on Saturdays and Sundays. In 2024 industrial action may also affect travel arrangements.
