Walks and Talks 2018

A full programme of walks has been planned for 2018.

Members may attend any of the events in this programme and friends and non-members are very welcome

All events are organised by Butterfly Conservation ~ Hertfordshire & Middlesex Branch unless otherwise stated

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Children are welcome at our events, but if under 16 they must be accompanied by at least one adult for two children. It is the responsibility of the accompanying adult(s) to ensure that the event is within the children's ability.

Event: Butterfly walk for mostly woodland butterflies including Purple Hairstreak, Silver-washed Fritillary and possibly Purple Emperor plus grassland butterflies such as Marbled White and Skippers Purple Hairstreak

Site: Norton Green and the Knebworth Woods area

Time & Meeting place: 10:30 Norton Green near Watery Grove. Walk to last approx. 2 ½ hours.
Directions/Transport: The nearest station is Stevenage (Great Northern from London King's Cross). From the A1M Junction 7 take the A602. Turn left at the first roundabout onto the A1072. After about a mile, take the left turn signed to Norton Green. Pass under the motorway and follow the road round to the left. The meeting place is half a mile further on in the car park layby in the hamlet of Norton Green
Information: Join Peter Clarke and Bob Clift to explore the woodlands and grasslands around Norton Green. Bring binoculars if you have some.

Event: Butterfly walk for White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillary Silver-washed Fritillary

Site: Bricket Wood, Herts

Time & Meeting place: 10:00 in the car park at St Stephen's Parish Centre, Station Road, Bricket Wood. Morning walk to finish approx. 12:30. Please park in the lower part of the car park.
Directions/Transport: From the roundabout at Junction 6 on the M1, take the slip road signed M1 south. Take the left turn halfway along this road (Mount Pleasant Lane), do not join the motorway. After a few twists & turns after about a mile you pass under a railway bridge. Continue along the road which bends sharply to the left. Pass Bricket Wood Station and the parish centre car park is on your right just after the junction with Drop Lane. Nearest station is Bricket Wood Station (London Midland - Watford Jnct to St. Albans Abbey Station)
Information: Optional extra - We will also be looking to repeat the sightings of Purple Emperor made in previous years from 12:30 -15:00. Bring packed lunch if you wish to stay for the afternoon and binoculars

Event: Butterfly Walk for summer butterflies with the Friends of Cassiobury Park Speckled Wood

Site: Cassiobury Park and Whippendell Woods

Time & Meeting place: 14:00 at the entrance opposite Langley Way
Directions/Transport: Cassiobury Park is a 2 minute walk from the Watford Metropolitan line station. Exit the station onto Cassiobury Park Avenue and turn right, after about 150 metres turn left onto Shepherds Road - the park is straight ahead of you. Alternatively Watford Junction (1.3 miles) and Watford High Street (2.1 miles) are the two closest overground stations. There is one official car park for Cassiobury Park at the end of Gade Avenue near the bottom of Cassiobury Park Avenue (WD18 7LG is the nearest postcode). There is street parking at weekends along the roads off Langley Way, such as Parkside Drive.
Information: Join Peter Fewell for the third and last of a series of walks around Cassiobury Park, looking at the butterflies found in different areas. There are toilets at the 'Hub' although the café in the park can get quite busy therefore it is suggested you bring your own refreshments.

Event: Moth Identification Evening ~ Organised by HMWT so a donation will be requested. Angle Shades

Information: Join the Reserves Officer and local moth expert Graeme Smith for an evening discovering the magnificent moth species found at Thorley Wash and the wider Stort Valley. No dogs allowed.

Event: Festival of Wildlife Weekend ~ Butterfly Walk lead by Malcolm Hull Meadow Brown

Thieves Lane car park located just off the A414 near Hertford. The nearest postcode is SG14 2WN. Please note that the entrance to the car park is on your left immediately after turning off the A414 at the roundabout onto Thieves Lane. Look out for the white entrance signs!
Information: The butterfly walk with Malcolm Hull is part of the HMWT Festival of Wildlife Weekend events. The butterfly walk is aimed for all ages as an introduction to some of the more common species found on the Big Butterfly Count identification sheet.

Event: Butterfly walk for Chalkhill Blue and summer butterflies
Part of the Big Butterfly Count programme of butterfly walks.

Time & Meeting place: 11:00 at the Sports Pavilion car park. (morning walk to finish approx. 13:00). Directions: From the A505 just west of Royston, take the exit to Royston (old road) that runs beneath the Heath; the car park is approx. 1km on the right.

Information: Join Martin Johnson and explore one of the best sites in Hertfordshire to see the spectacular Chalkhill Blue. There will be some steep slopes

Event: Butterfly Walk for summer butterflies with the Friends of Halsey Field
Part of the Big Butterfly Count programme of butterfly walks.

Site: Halsey Field Local Wildlife Site

Time & Meeting place: 13:30 - 15:00 at the entrance to Halsey Field
Directions/Transport: Nearest station is Hemel Hempstead (West Midlands Trains from London Euston) and then approx 2 mile walk. The address of the field is off Fennycroft Road, Gadebridge, Hemel Hempstead, but as parking is rather difficult in Fennycroft, it may be easier for people to park in Halsey Drive (HP1 3SE) and walk down to the field (about 10 mins walk). Chris will be available to accompany anyone who arrives at her house at 13:15pm to the site.
Information: Join Chris Ridley for a butterfly walk around a very special local wildlife site. The event will include a guided walk round the field. There is a slope down to the field, but this can be avoided by using an entrance at the bottom of the field for anyone who needs this. The Wildlife Site itself is quite flat, though the paths are rough and not suitable for wheelchairs.
Please contact Chris in advance if you decide to park near her house in Gadebridge or for more detailed maps of the area. A board at the side of Fennycroft Road on the grass, will indicate where to walk to access the site, with signs leading to the Halsey Field

Information: Join volunteer Simon for two events in one - a moth light will be set up to attract stunning late summer moths. Then take a short walk to look out for bats using bat detectors.

Event: Butterfly Walk for Small Copper and other early autumn butterflies Small Copper

Time & Meeting place: 14:00 in the public car park at Ferrers Lane in the middle of the Common. This walk to last 1 to 1 ½ hours
Directions/Transport: From St Albans take the B651 north towards Wheathampstead. Pass through Sandridge Village and you will reach the common half a mile further on. At the cross roads in the centre of the common, turn left into Ferrers Lane. The car park is 500 yards along on the left. Nearest station is Harpenden (Thameslink from London St. Pancras Int.) - approx 3 miles
Information: Join Malcolm Hull for a walk around Nomansland Common, one of the best grassland sites for early autumn butterflies especially Small Copper!
